October — The Right Time to Act
October is the optimal time for pre-winter roof maintenance in Southampton. Leaf fall has begun — valleys can be cleared before the main blockage. Weather is still generally mild enough for safe working. Any repairs identified can be completed before the first significant autumn storm. Doing this in February after a January leak costs more and causes more damage.

The Annual Roof Check — What to Look For
From the ground with binoculars or a phone camera with zoom: ridge tiles for any movement or gaps in mortar, slipped or displaced tiles especially on the rear slope, lead flashings around chimney stacks for any lifting or gaps, fascia boards for any sagging or discolouration, gutters for any overflowing or visible blockage, and valley areas for moss and debris build-up.
From inside the loft: any daylight coming through, dark staining on rafters indicating old or active leaks, and the condition of the underlay around any penetrations such as soil pipes and flue liners.
Valley Clearing — The Most Important Annual Job in Southampton
Southampton's mature suburban tree canopy — particularly across Highfield, Bassett, Chandler's Ford and the Itchen and Test valley areas — deposits significant leaf fall into roof valleys every October and November. A blocked valley in a Southampton downpour causes a ceiling leak within hours. Valley clearing takes 30 to 60 minutes and costs £100 to £250. Gutters — Clear Before November

After a significant storm — look from the ground for any displaced ridge tiles, slipped slates or tiles, and check inside the loft for any new signs of water ingress. Do not access the roof. If you see displaced tiles from the ground, call a roofer the same day — a displaced ridge tile in a second storm becomes a fully dislodged ridge tile that falls into the garden or onto a car.
